First-Time Hair Colour: What to Know Before You Dye

First-time hair colour

Thinking about colouring your hair for the first time? It’s exciting, and a little nerve-wracking. You’ve probably seen a shade on someone and thought, could I pull that off? The honest answer is usually yes, but there’s a gap between the photo you saved and the result you’ll actually get, and that gap is where most first-timers get caught out. This guide walks you through everything to know before you dye, from choosing a shade to what it’ll cost and how to keep it looking good in Singapore’s humidity. No jargon, just what we’d tell you across the chair.

Choosing a shade that suits you

The most flattering colour isn’t always the one that looks best on your phone screen. It’s the one that works with your skin tone and your natural hair. A few pointers:

  • Warm skin tones often glow with golden, caramel and honey shades. Cool skin tones tend to suit ash, cool brown and beige tones.
  • Go gradual for your first time. A colour one to two shades from your natural is easier to live with, easier to maintain, and far more forgiving than a dramatic jump.
  • Think about upkeep before looks. A soft brown that grows out gracefully is a very different commitment from a bold blonde that needs regular attention.

Bring a couple of reference photos when you come in, and be open when your stylist adjusts the plan. A good colourist isn’t saying no to your dream shade, they’re getting you a version that actually suits you and your hair’s condition. Browse our hair colour ideas to get a feel for what you like.

Permanent vs semi-permanent: what’s the difference?

This trips up a lot of first-timers, so here’s the plain version.

  • Semi-permanent colour coats the hair and fades gradually over several washes. It’s gentler, can’t lighten your hair, and is a low-commitment way to try a tone. Great if you’re testing the waters.
  • Permanent colour opens the hair cuticle and deposits pigment that lasts until it grows out. It gives fuller grey coverage and richer, longer-lasting results, but you’ll see regrowth at the roots over time.

For a first-timer who wants something lasting, permanent is often the way to go. If you’re cautious or just want to experiment, semi-permanent lets you change your mind sooner.

Will you need bleach?

This is the big one, especially in Singapore where cool, light shades are so popular. Here’s the rule of thumb: you can only add colour darker or similar to your natural shade without lifting it, but to go lighter than your natural hair, you need to lighten it first. Colour on its own cannot make dark hair blonde or pastel.

Most people here have naturally dark hair, so those ash greys, soft blondes and vivid fashion shades almost always require bleaching first. That’s not a reason to avoid them, but it does mean more time in the chair, more cost, and more aftercare. If a cool grey is your goal, our guide to ash grey hair in Singapore explains exactly what’s involved. If you’d rather skip bleach for now, a darker or warmer shade through our hair colour service, or subtle balayage and highlights, can still give a lovely result. If you’re considering a softer, hand-painted look, our balayage cost guide explains the pricing.

The patch test: don’t skip it

Before any colour, a patch test checks that your skin won’t react to the dye. A tiny amount is applied, usually behind the ear or on the inner arm, ahead of your appointment. It feels like a small hassle, but an allergic reaction to hair dye is genuinely unpleasant and occasionally serious, so it’s non-negotiable for a first-timer. When you book, ask about the timing so it’s done in good time before your colour date.

Match your goal to the process and upkeep

Different looks mean very different commitments. This table gives you a realistic picture before you decide.

Colour goal Process Upkeep
Rich brown / darker Single colour, no bleach needed Root touch-up every 6–8 weeks; low maintenance
Warm caramel / honey May need light lifting on dark hair Refresh every 8–10 weeks; gloss to keep tone
Ash grey / soft blonde Bleaching then toning, often multiple steps Toner every 4–6 weeks; roots visible sooner
Balayage / highlights Painted lightening, blended Grows out softly; refresh every 3–4 months
Fashion / vivid shades Bleach to a pale base, then colour High upkeep; fades fast, frequent refresh

What it costs and why it varies

First-timers are often surprised that colour isn’t one flat price. At Orange & Teal, colour typically ranges from around $50 to $180, and where you land depends on your hair length and thickness, the shade, and how much work it takes. A single-process brown on short hair sits at the lower end. A cool grey that needs bleaching (from around $50 to $160) plus toning on long, thick hair naturally costs more because it’s more product and more time.

The most useful thing you can do is come in for a consultation. We’ll look at your actual hair, talk through your goal, and give you a clear quote before anything starts, so there are no surprises. For a fuller breakdown, our men’s hair colour and hair colour pages are a good reference.

Roots, upkeep and the humidity factor

Colour is a relationship, not a one-off. As your hair grows, roots appear, and lighter shades show them sooner. Plan for touch-ups: darker colours can stretch six to eight weeks, while bleached shades often need attention every four to six. Toners also fade, especially cool greys that can turn brassy over time.

Singapore’s humidity adds its own twist. Heat, sun and sweat all speed up fading and can make colour look dull faster than in a cooler climate. To protect your investment:

  • Use a colour-safe, sulphate-free shampoo and wash with cooler water.
  • Don’t over-wash; every wash lifts a little colour.
  • Protect hair from direct sun on long outdoor days.
  • For cool tones, a purple or toning shampoo once a week helps fight brassiness.

Questions to ask before you commit

A good consultation is a conversation. Come ready to ask:

  1. Will my goal shade need bleaching, and if so, how many sessions?
  2. Is my hair healthy enough for this, or should we build up to it?
  3. How often will I realistically need to come back?
  4. What will the upkeep cost me over a year, not just today?
  5. What aftercare products do I actually need?

If a shade would seriously damage your hair, we’ll tell you honestly and suggest a path that gets you there safely. That’s not us being cautious for the sake of it, it’s how you end up loving your colour instead of regretting it.
