The Groom’s Haircut: A Wedding Grooming Guide

Well-groomed groom on his wedding day

Every groom wants to look his best on the day, and photographs from a wedding last a lifetime — so the haircut deserves more thought than a last-minute walk-in. The single most common mistake we see is booking the cut for the day before, when the hair is too short and too fresh to sit naturally. Good grooming for a wedding is really about timing: knowing when to cut, when to trial, and how to plan the small details so nothing is rushed. At Orange & Teal in Bedok, we have prepped plenty of grooms, and here is the honest, practical guide to getting it right.

The golden rule up front: your haircut should look like the best version of your everyday self, not a brand-new style you have never worn. Your wedding day is not the time to experiment. Plan ahead, settle on a look you already trust, and let it settle into place before the cameras come out.

Why you should not cut it too fresh

It sounds counterintuitive, but a haircut done the day before often looks worse in photos, not better. A fresh cut can look stiff and severe, the lines too crisp, and the hair too short to fall the way it naturally does. Sides that are freshly clipped can look almost shaved under bright light, and the whole thing reads a little raw.

Hair looks its most natural three to five days after a cut. By then the shape has relaxed, the lines have softened, and it moves the way it is meant to. That window is your target — so count backwards from the wedding to find your cut date rather than leaving it to the last minute.

The trial cut: your dress rehearsal

The best insurance a groom can buy is a trial cut. A few weeks before the wedding, come in and get exactly the cut you plan to have on the day, styled exactly as you want it. This does several things at once — it lets you and your barber agree on the length and shape, it shows you how it photographs and how it holds through a long day, and it removes every scrap of guesswork from the real appointment.

If anything is not quite right, you have found out with time to spare rather than the morning of. When the wedding cut comes round, your barber simply repeats a known result. It is the same logic as a menswear fitting — nobody wears the suit for the first time at the altar, and your hair deserves the same courtesy. Not sure how to describe what you want at the trial? Our guide on how to ask for a haircut in Singapore gives you the words that get results.

Beard and shave planning

If you wear a beard, it needs the same forethought as the hair. Decide early whether you are going clean-shaven, keeping a tidy beard, or somewhere in between, and do a trial of that too. A beard shaped and lined up a few days ahead looks cleaner in photos than one done that morning, when redness and irritation can still show.

For a clean-shaven look, a professional hot towel shave gives the closest, smoothest finish there is — but time it a day or two before, not on the morning, so any redness settles. Sensitive skin or a tendency toward razor bumps? Trial the shave a couple of weeks out so you know how your skin reacts before the day that matters. For keeping a beard neat rather than removing it, our beard grooming guide covers shaping and upkeep.

Skin, brows and the finishing details

The camera notices the small things, so give them a little attention in the weeks before. Start a simple skincare routine early — cleanse, moisturise, and do not try a brand-new product in the final week in case it disagrees with your skin. Stay hydrated, get your sleep, and a groom’s skin photographs far better for it.

Tidy the details that frame the face: eyebrows, nose and ear hair, and neat sideburns all make a quiet but real difference in close-up shots. A good barber will square these away as part of the cut. None of it is about looking made-up — it is simply about looking like a well-groomed version of yourself, which is exactly what the photos should capture.

Your grooming countdown

Here is a simple timeline to keep everything on track. Adjust it to your own schedule, but the shape holds for most grooms.

Countdown Grooming task
2–3 months before Settle on your look; start a simple skincare routine; book your barber
3–4 weeks before Trial cut and trial beard shape, styled exactly as you plan for the day
1 week before Final tweaks only; no new products or bold changes
4–5 days before Your wedding haircut — timed to settle, not sit raw
1–2 days before Hot towel shave or beard line-up, so redness has time to settle
Morning of Wash, style with product you have tested, and go

Book early — this matters most

The one thing that undoes even the best plan is leaving the booking too late. Good barbers get busy, and wedding season and weekends fill up fast. As soon as you have a date, secure both your trial and your wedding-day slots — ideally two to three months ahead. Booking the pair together means the same barber, who now knows your hair, handles both, and there is no scramble in the final week.

Tell your barber it is for your wedding when you book. It changes how we plan the appointment — we will allow more time, talk through the photos and the timeline, and make sure the cut is dialled in rather than rushed. It is genuinely one of our favourite jobs, and a little notice lets us do it properly. If you are also thinking about the groomsmen or the dads, mention that too and we can line everyone up in one visit.
