Your First Barber Visit: What to Expect (Singapore)

Customer on his first visit to a barbershop

Walking into a barbershop for the first time can feel oddly intimidating. Maybe you’ve only ever had quick cuts at a neighbourhood shop, or you’re new to Singapore and unsure how things work here. What do you say? How long does it take? Do you tip? The truth is, a good barber’s whole job is to make you feel at ease, and once you know the flow, there’s nothing to it. This guide walks you through exactly what happens at your first visit to Orange & Teal in Bedok, from booking to the finish, so you can sit down relaxed and walk out looking sharp.

Before you go: booking your slot

You can usually walk in, but a first visit goes more smoothly when you book ahead. It means there’s a chair waiting, a barber ready to give you proper time, and no standing around. The easiest way is to WhatsApp us, tell us roughly what you’re after and when you’d like to come, and we’ll confirm a slot. If you’re not sure what style you want yet, that’s completely fine, we’ll talk it through when you arrive. Bringing a little one instead? Our guide to a baby’s first haircut covers the tiny-client version.

Before your appointment, it helps to have one or two reference photos saved on your phone. Even a rough idea of length or a picture of a cut you like gives your barber a clear starting point. If you’d rather describe it in words, our guide on how to ask for a haircut in Singapore gives you the vocabulary. Still weighing up where to go? Our guide to choosing a barber or a salon lays out the differences.

The consultation: getting on the same page

Every good cut starts with a proper consultation, and this is the most important part. Before any clippers come out, your barber will chat with you about what you want. Expect questions like: How short on the sides? Keep length on top or take it down? Any styling you do each morning? How much upkeep are you happy with? Bringing your child for the first time? Our kids’ first haircut guide helps them settle in.

This is your moment to be honest. If you’re a wash-and-go type who won’t touch product, say so, and we’ll cut something that looks good with zero effort. If you’ve got a cowlick, a scar, or a patch you like to keep covered, mention it now. There are no silly questions here. A two-minute conversation is what separates a cut you love from one that’s merely fine. Show your photos, point to what you like, and don’t be shy about what you don’t want.

The wash, cut and finish

Once you’re agreed on the plan, the cut itself follows a comfortable rhythm.

  1. The wash. Many cuts start with a shampoo at the basin. It’s not just cleaning, wet hair cuts more precisely, and honestly, it feels great in our heat. If you’d prefer to skip it, just say.
  2. The cut. Your barber works through the shape you agreed on, using clippers, scissors or both. They’ll often check in as they go, showing you the length or asking if you’d like it shorter. Speak up any time, it’s much easier to adjust mid-cut than after.
  3. The finish. This is where it comes together: cleaning up the neckline and around the ears, a detail on the edges, and a style with a little product so you can see how it sits. Your barber will show you the back with a mirror before you’re done.

Throughout, you can relax. You don’t need to hold conversation if you’d rather sit quietly, and you don’t need to keep still like a statue, just follow any gentle cues to tilt your head.

What to do at each step

If you like knowing the plan in advance, here’s the whole visit at a glance, and what’s expected of you at each stage.

Step What happens Your part
Booking You reserve a slot via WhatsApp Pick a time, note any style ideas
Arrival You’re greeted and seated Arrive a few minutes early, relax
Consultation Barber discusses your look Share photos, be honest about upkeep
Wash Hair is shampooed at the basin Sit back; say if you’d rather skip
Cut Barber shapes your hair Speak up if you want changes
Finish Edges cleaned, hair styled Check the mirror, give feedback
Payment You settle up Pay; tipping is optional here

How long it takes

A standard men’s cut usually takes around 30 to 45 minutes, a little longer if it includes a wash, a beard tidy, or a detailed fade. A first visit can run slightly longer because the consultation is more thorough, we’re getting to know your hair. It’s worth not rushing this one. Give yourself a comfortable window rather than squeezing it between two appointments, so you can enjoy the process and get the cut exactly right. Once we know your hair, future visits move faster.

Communicating your style with confidence

The number one reason people leave a barber disappointed isn’t a bad barber, it’s a gap in communication. Here’s how to close it:

  • Use photos over jargon. “This length here” while pointing at a picture beats guessing at numbers you’re unsure of.
  • Describe the vibe. Words like neat, textured, low-maintenance or sharp tell us a lot.
  • Be clear on the sides. A skin fade, a taper and short back-and-sides are very different, so make sure you’re picturing the same thing.
  • Say what you didn’t like last time. If a past cut was too short on top, tell us. It’s the fastest way to a result you’ll love.

Still unsure of the etiquette, tipping, timing, phone use? Our guide to barbershop etiquette in Singapore clears it all up so nothing catches you off guard.

Aftercare and your next visit

Before you leave, ask your barber how to style the cut at home and which product suits your hair, a small tip that makes a daily difference. Coloured or treated hair may need a little extra care, and our grooming team is happy to advise. To keep the shape looking its best, plan your next trim; our guide on how often you need a haircut gives realistic timelines by style. Many regulars simply book a standing slot so they never drift out of shape.
