How to Tame a Cowlick: A Men’s Guide (Singapore)

Man’s textured cut styled around a cowlick

You know the one. That patch of hair near your crown or front hairline that refuses to lie the way you want it, sticking up, splitting into a swirl, or flicking off in the wrong direction no matter how much water and paste you throw at it. That’s a cowlick, and if you’ve spent years fighting yours every morning, we’ve got good news: you can’t remove a cowlick, but you can absolutely tame it. The trick is to stop battling it and start working with the way your hair naturally grows. Here’s how we do it at Orange & Teal, from the cut through to the styling.

We see cowlicks on the chair every single day, and the men who’ve made peace with theirs almost always got there the same way, a cut that respects the growth pattern and a couple of small styling habits. No magic product required.

What actually causes a cowlick

A cowlick is simply a spot where your hair grows in a spiral or opposing direction to the hair around it. It’s set by your follicles before you’re born, which is why yours has probably been there your whole life and why nothing you buy will make it grow differently. Most men have at least one, commonly at the crown (the swirl at the back-top of your head), the front hairline, or the fringe area where hair wants to part or flick.

A “crown” is closely related: it’s the natural spiral at the top-back of your head where hair radiates outwards. Some men have a single tidy crown, others have a double crown, two swirls that fight each other and make the back of the head tricky to keep flat. None of this is a flaw. It’s just information your barber needs to cut you properly.

The real fix starts with the cut

Here’s the thing most people get wrong: they try to solve a cowlick with product when the answer is in the cut. The single most important principle is to cut with the growth, not against it. When a barber leaves the right length and blends around the swirl, the weight of the hair helps hold it down and the cowlick disappears into the shape. Cut too short in the wrong spot and you do the opposite, you expose the swirl and make it stick up worse.

A few things a good barber will do for a cowlick:

  • Leave enough length over the cowlick so its own weight keeps it flat. Very short crops can make a crown swirl or front cowlick more obvious, not less.
  • Point-cut and blend around the swirl to soften any hard lines the growth creates.
  • Choose a part or direction that flows with the cowlick rather than forcing hair across it.

This is exactly why it pays to tell your barber where your cowlick sits and how it behaves. If you’re not sure how to explain it, our guide on how to ask for a haircut will help you get the words right.

Match the cowlick spot to a styling fix

Cowlick spot Styling fix
Front hairline (sticking up) Blow-dry it flat first, then style your fringe forward or up with a matte paste
Front (splitting the fringe) Push the fringe to the side the cowlick already favours; don’t force a straight fringe
Crown swirl Keep length on top; style hair to follow the swirl’s direction, not against it
Double crown Ask for a textured, slightly longer cut; a fade too high exposes both swirls
Nape / back of neck A clean taper keeps a low cowlick tidy; product won’t help here, cutting will
Side / temple flick Blow-dry the flick back, then a light clay to hold the direction

How to style around it at home

Once the cut is right, styling is about redirecting the hair while it’s damp and setting it as it dries. The order matters more than the product:

  1. Start with damp hair, not soaking or bone dry. Wet hair is when you can retrain the direction. Towel it until it’s just damp.
  2. Blow-dry the cowlick first, against its natural direction. Use your fingers or a brush to push the swirl flat, aim the nozzle down the hair shaft, and hold it there until that section is dry. This is the single most effective home trick for a stubborn cowlick.
  3. Then dry the rest of your hair into your chosen style.
  4. Apply product last, to dry hair, to lock the direction in. A firm matte paste or clay holds far better than a shiny pomade, which can go limp in our humidity.

The mistake we see most is men reaching for water and gel on a dry cowlick at 8am and wondering why it springs back by lunch. Heat sets hair; water alone doesn’t. Thirty seconds with a hairdryer beats any amount of paste.

Products that keep it under control

You don’t need a shelf full of products, just the right kind of hold for our climate. For a cowlick you generally want strong hold with a matte finish:

  • Clay or matte paste — firm grip that keeps the swirl where you put it, without the wet look that slides out in humidity.
  • Pre-styler or sea-salt spray — worked into damp hair before drying, it gives the shaft grip so the blow-dry holds longer.
  • A little goes a long way — too much product weighs hair down and can actually make a front cowlick flop and separate.

Styles that work with a cowlick, not against it

The smartest move is to pick a style that uses your cowlick instead of hiding it. A front cowlick that pushes hair up? Lean into a textured quiff or fringe up and it becomes a feature. A crown swirl? A slightly longer, textured top with tapered sides sits beautifully over it. Men with a persistent middle cowlick often find a curtains style works with the natural split rather than fighting it.

On the flip side, be wary of styles that expose the swirl, a very tight buzz or a super-short crop can put a crown cowlick on full display. If you like it short, ask for a little length left right over the swirl.
