Men’s Hair Styling: Pomade vs Clay vs Wax

Styling men's hair with pomade and clay

You get the perfect style at the barber, walk out feeling sharp, and by the time you’ve reached the MRT platform your hair has already started to droop. Sound familiar? In Singapore, styling men’s hair isn’t just about the right technique, it’s about surviving the humidity that quietly undoes your hard work by mid-morning. The good news is that the right product, used the right way, changes everything. This guide breaks down pomade, clay, wax and the rest so you can finally get hold that lasts.

Why humidity is the real enemy

Moisture in the air is what makes styling here so tricky. Humidity swells the hair shaft, loosens your style and encourages frizz, which is why a look that holds all day in a drier climate can collapse in an hour here. The fix is choosing products that either resist water or set firm, and being realistic about shine. Anything too greasy tends to attract even more moisture and slide out. Once you understand that, picking a product becomes much simpler.

The main product types, decoded

Walk into any store and the wall of tins and tubes is genuinely overwhelming. But almost everything falls into a handful of categories, each defined by two things: hold (how firmly it locks your hair in place) and finish (how shiny or matte it looks). Get those two right for your hairstyle and you’re most of the way there.

Pomade

The classic. Pomade gives a slick, shiny finish and is brilliant for combed-back, side-part and retro styles. The key distinction is water-based versus oil-based. Water-based pomades wash out easily with shampoo and are far better for our climate. Oil-based ones give incredible shine and reworkability but are stubborn to wash out and can feel heavy in the heat. For most men here, water-based is the sensible choice.

Clay

If we had to recommend one product for Singapore, clay would be near the top. It offers strong, flexible hold with a low-shine, natural matte finish. Clay adds thickness and grip, which makes fine or flat hair look fuller. It’s ideal for textured crops, messy quiffs and casual everyday styles, and it handles humidity well because it isn’t greasy.

Wax

Wax sits between pomade and clay. It gives medium hold with a slight sheen, and it’s pliable, so you can restyle through the day. Good for shorter styles that need definition without looking wet. It’s a safe, versatile all-rounder if you’re not sure where to start.

Cream

Styling cream is the lightest option, offering soft, natural hold with low shine. It’s less about locking hair in place and more about control and taming frizz. Great for longer hair, natural everyday looks, or blow-dried styles where you want movement rather than structure.

Fibre

Fibre (sometimes labelled fiber) has a stringy, elastic texture that adds separation and volume with a matte-to-low-shine finish. It’s excellent for spiky, textured and messy looks, and it grips well without going crunchy. A favourite for thicker hair that needs taming with movement.

Powder

Texturising powder is the secret weapon for anyone with fine or limp hair. You sprinkle a tiny amount at the roots and it instantly adds volume and grip with a completely matte finish. It’s often used alongside another product rather than on its own, and a little goes a very long way.

Gel

Old-school but effective, gel delivers the strongest, most rigid hold with high shine. It sets hard, which is why it survives humidity, but it can look stiff and flake if overused. Best in small amounts for slick, structured styles, or mixed with a little clay to soften it.

Product cheat sheet

Product Hold Shine / finish Best for
Pomade (water-based) Medium–strong High shine, slick Side parts, combed-back, classic styles
Clay Strong, flexible Matte, natural Textured crops, quiffs, everyday wear
Wax Medium Low–medium sheen Short defined styles, all-rounder
Cream Light Low shine, natural Longer hair, soft frizz control
Fibre Medium–strong Matte–low shine Spiky, messy, textured volume
Powder Light (volume) Fully matte Fine, flat hair needing lift
Gel Very strong High shine, wet look Slick, rigid, structured styles

Matching product to your hairstyle

The style you leave the salon with should guide your product choice. A textured crop or a modern popular men’s cut wants clay or fibre for that lived-in, matte separation. A neat side part or slick-back calls for pomade or gel. Longer, flowing styles do best with cream. If you’ve got a two-block or fringe-forward look, a light clay keeps the shape without weighing the fringe down. When in doubt, ask your barber what they used on you, and buy that.

How much to use and how to apply

Most men use far too much product, and that’s the single biggest reason styles fall flat or look greasy. Here’s a reliable method:

  1. Start with a small amount, about the size of a pea or a five-cent coin. You can always add more.
  2. Rub it thoroughly between your palms and fingers until it’s warm and evenly spread. Never dab it straight onto one spot.
  3. Work it through from the back and sides first, saving the front for last so you don’t overload your fringe.
  4. For matte products like clay and fibre, apply to towel-dried or dry hair for maximum hold. For pomade and gel, damp hair gives a slicker finish.
  5. Style with your fingers or a comb, then let it set. Resist touching it too much afterwards.

A blow-dry first makes a huge difference to volume and staying power, especially for fine hair. Even 60 seconds with a dryer to set the shape before product goes a long way in the heat.

Humidity survival tips

  • Favour matte, water-based or clay products over oily ones. Grease attracts moisture.
  • Blow-dry the shape in first, so the style is already set before product locks it.
  • Use texturising powder at the roots for lasting lift that sweat won’t flatten.
  • Carry a small tin for a midday touch-up if you’re out all day.
  • Keep your cut fresh. A well-shaped cut holds its form with far less product.

Product can only do so much. A good foundation is a good cut, so booking a regular men’s cut and grooming appointment is honestly the best styling upgrade you can make. If you also colour your hair, our notes on men’s hair colour and general hair care are worth a look, since coloured hair needs gentler products.

Finding your combination

Most men land on a two-product routine: a texturising powder or blow-dry for volume, plus a clay or fibre for hold. Once you find your combination, styling takes under two minutes each morning. It’s worth experimenting, and your barber sees your hair up close, so they’re the best person to steer you.
