Men’s Haircut Types in Singapore: Fades, Tapers & More

Men's haircut types — fades and tapers

Walk into any HDB heartland barbershop and you’ll hear the same requests: “fade”, “taper”, “two-block”. But what do they actually mean, and which one suits your face, your hair and Singapore’s relentless humidity? This guide breaks down the most-asked men’s haircut types so you can walk in knowing exactly what you want.

We cut all of these every week at Orange & Teal, and the honest truth is that the “best” haircut is the one that works with your hair type, your lifestyle and how much upkeep you’re realistically willing to do. Let’s get you sorted.

Fades: the most-requested cut in Singapore

A fade is any haircut where the hair gradually shortens down the sides and back, blending from longer on top to skin (or near-skin) at the bottom. It’s clean, sharp and cool in our weather because the sides stay short. The difference between fades is simply where the fade starts.

Skin fade (bald fade)

The hair blends all the way down to bare skin. It’s the sharpest, most dramatic option and photographs beautifully. The catch: skin grows out fast, so you’ll see stubble on the sides within a week. Great if you love a crisp look and don’t mind frequent trims.

Low, mid and high fade

These describe how high up the head the fade begins:

  • Low fade — starts just above the ear. Subtle, office-friendly, flatters most face shapes.
  • Mid fade — starts around the temple. The balanced all-rounder; you can’t go wrong here.
  • High fade — starts near the crown. Bold, high-contrast, makes the top look fuller. Best for confident, edgy looks.

Taper: the low-maintenance cousin

A taper is often confused with a fade, but it’s gentler. Instead of blending to skin, a taper simply shortens the hair around the hairline, ears and neckline while keeping more length on the sides. Nothing goes bald.

This is the smart choice if you want something tidy and professional that grows out gracefully. A taper looks intentional even at week four or five, which means fewer trips to the barber. If your workplace is conservative or you simply hate fussing, a taper is your friend. It’s a staple of our men’s cut and grooming menu for exactly this reason.

Classic short cuts: crew cut, buzz and French crop

Crew cut

A crew cut is short all over, slightly longer at the front, tapering shorter towards the crown. It’s timeless, masculine and almost foolproof. Barely any styling, dries in seconds after a humid commute, and suits the vast majority of men. If you want one cut that always looks respectable, this is it.

Buzz cut

The buzz cut is a single, uniform short length all over, done with clippers. It’s the ultimate no-effort, no-heat, no-product cut, which makes it brilliant for Singapore. Perfect if you’re active, sweat a lot, or are embracing a thinning hairline. Just be aware it exposes your scalp and skull shape, so a quick chat with your barber first is wise.

French crop

The French crop pairs a short, textured top with a blunt fringe swept forward, usually over a fade or taper. It’s fashionable, easy to style with a pea-sized bit of matte paste, and works especially well for men with a higher forehead since the fringe softens it. Low upkeep on top, sharp on the sides.

Korean-inspired styles: two-block and comma hair

These trends came from Korean pop culture and have taken over younger Singaporean barbershops for good reason: they’re stylish and flattering.

Two-block

A two-block keeps length on top while cutting the sides and back noticeably shorter, creating two distinct “blocks”. It’s versatile, youthful and works with straight or wavy hair. We’ve written a full guide on the two block and comma hair if you want the details.

Comma hair

Comma hair is the styled finish where the fringe curves inward like a comma (,) at the temples. It usually needs a little natural wave, which is why many guys pair it with a Korean perm to hold the shape in our humidity. Without a perm, expect to use a curling wand or blow-dry it into place.

The versatile side part

The side part is the classic gentleman’s cut: hair combed neatly to one side along a defined parting, often paired with a taper or fade on the sides. It reads mature, polished and professional, ideal for weddings, interviews and the office. It does need product (a bit of pomade) and a comb to look its best, so factor in two minutes each morning.

Quick comparison: type, best for and maintenance

How to ask for it (and survive the humidity)

The best thing you can do is bring a photo. Barbers think in pictures, not just words, and a reference removes all the guesswork. Beyond that, tell us three things: how you want the sides (fade or taper, and how short), how much length on top, and how much time you want to spend styling each morning. That last one is the most honest and useful.

For Singapore specifically, remember that anything relying on volume or a stiff style will fight the humidity. If you sweat through your commute daily, lean towards shorter sides, textured tops and matte products rather than shiny gels that slide out. If you love a longer, styled look but can’t get it to hold, ask us about a subtle perm to lock in the shape.
