The Modern Mullet for Men in Singapore

Mullet Men

The mullet is back, and it’s nothing like the one your dad had in the eighties. The modern mullet is sharper, more intentional and far more wearable, which is why you’re seeing it on footballers, musicians and plenty of stylish guys around Singapore. Done well, it’s a bold statement with real attitude; done thoughtfully, it can be subtle enough for the office. This guide explains the modern take, who pulls it off, how it pairs with fades and perms, how to style it, and what upkeep really looks like.

We cut a fair few mullets at Orange & Teal, and the conversation always starts the same way: how bold do you actually want to go? The answer changes everything. Here’s what you need to know before you commit.

The modern mullet: not your dad’s mullet

The formula is still business at the front, party at the back: shorter on the top and sides, longer at the back. What’s changed is the execution. The old mullet was a hard, unblended contrast that looked accidental. The modern mullet is disconnected or blended with intent, often paired with texture, a fade or a perm, so it reads as a deliberate style rather than a grow-out gone wrong.

The other big shift is versatility. Today’s mullet lives on a spectrum, from a whisper of length at the back that most people wouldn’t even clock, right through to a dramatic, shaggy statement. That range is exactly why it suits so many more people than it used to.

Subtle vs bold: finding your version

The single most important decision is how far you take it, and it’s worth being honest with yourself about your day-to-day life before you choose.

The subtle mullet

A soft, tapered version with only a little extra length at the back and gentle texture through the top. It nods to the trend without shouting, and it’s the safest choice if you have a corporate job or simply want to test the waters. From the front it often just looks like a modern textured cut.

The modern (mid) mullet

The sweet spot for most guys: clear length and shape at the back, textured top, and tidy or faded sides. It’s recognisably a mullet but still balanced and easy to wear day to day.

The bold mullet

Longer, shaggier and higher contrast, often with a wolf-cut influence through the top. This is the full statement. It photographs brilliantly and turns heads, but it asks more of you in confidence and upkeep. If you love an edgy look, this is your lane.

Mullet styles at a glance

Mullet style Vibe Maintenance
Subtle / tapered mullet Understated, office-friendly, modern Low; a trim every 5–6 weeks
Modern mid mullet Balanced statement, everyday cool Medium; every 4–5 weeks
Mullet with fade Sharp, high-contrast, edgy Higher; fade tidy-up every 2–3 weeks
Permed / textured mullet Shaggy, rock-and-roll, characterful Medium; trims plus perm care
Bold / wolf mullet Full statement, high drama Higher; regular shaping to keep form

Who pulls off a mullet?

The good news is that the mullet is more democratic than its reputation suggests, mostly because the modern versions are so adaptable. A few pointers:

  • Oval and oblong faces — flatter almost any mullet; the length at the back balances nicely.
  • Round faces — keep height and texture on top and a bit of length at the back to lengthen the face.
  • Square faces — a textured mullet softens a strong jaw beautifully.
  • Straight, wavy or curly hair — all work; wavy and curly hair gives the back natural movement and body, which many people love.

Beyond face shape, the real question is lifestyle and confidence. A mullet draws the eye, so it rewards someone happy to wear a look with a bit of personality. If you’re unsure, our face shape guide helps, and a subtle version is always a low-risk way to try it. Show us a photo and we’ll tell you honestly how it will sit on your hair.

Pairing with fades and perms

Two pairings do most of the heavy lifting in the modern mullet, and they push the look in very different directions.

The mullet with a fade

Fading the sides gives you a clean, high-contrast finish: crisp and sharp above the ears, with the length concentrated at the back and top. A low or skin fade makes the whole thing feel current and deliberate. The trade-off is upkeep, since faded sides grow out fastest and want tidying every two to three weeks.

The permed mullet

If your hair is straight and you want that effortless, shaggy texture, a soft perm through the top and back does the trick. It adds body, makes the shape hold, and gives the whole cut a relaxed, rock-and-roll feel with very little daily styling. It’s one of the most popular mullet upgrades we do. Curly-haired guys get this look for free, of course; see our notes on styling products to keep it looking its best.

Styling and everyday upkeep

A mullet is more forgiving to style than it looks, especially the textured and permed versions. A simple routine:

  1. On towel-dried hair, work a little sea salt spray or texture spray through the top and back for grip and movement.
  2. Add a small amount of matte paste or clay to define the top and separate the pieces.
  3. Push the back into shape with your fingers; leave it a little messy on purpose.

Keep product light and matte so the texture stays visible and doesn’t go greasy in the humidity. As for trims, the back and the overall shape are what keep a mullet looking styled rather than shaggy. A subtle mullet can stretch to five or six weeks; a faded or bold one needs shaping every two to four weeks to stay sharp.

Growing it out (when you’re ready)

Here’s the honest bit: a mullet grows out more gracefully than most bold cuts, because the length is already uneven by design. When you want to move on, you have two easy paths. You can let the top and sides catch up to the back and transition into a shaggier all-over style or a wolf cut, or you can simply have the back taken down and blend everything into a normal cut in a single visit. Either way, you’re never stuck. If you’d rather explore the whole range first, our haircuts menu and men’s haircut types guide lay out the options. If a wolf cut appeals, our hush cut vs wolf cut guide compares both layered looks.
