Slick Back Hair for Men: How to Get & Style It
There’s something timeless about slick back hair. It’s the look of a sharp businessman, a groom on his wedding day, a man who has his act together. The good news is it’s one of the most achievable styles going, because the hair simply goes backwards. The tricky news, here in Singapore at least, is getting it to stay put when the air is thick and your scalp is doing its best to undo your work by 11am. This guide covers the cut you need, the length required, the difference between a wet and matte slick, the products that survive our climate, and how to get through the awkward growing-out phase.
We do a lot of slick backs at Orange & Teal, for weddings, interviews and men who just want to look put-together every day. The honest truth is that a slick back is more forgiving than a pompadour and less fussy than a quiff, which makes it a brilliant everyday option once you know the tricks. Let’s get into it.
What actually is a slick back?
A slick back is exactly what it sounds like: the hair is combed straight back away from your face, from the front all the way to the crown, and held in place with product. There’s no parting, no fringe, no forward styling. It’s clean, it opens up your face, and it works from the boardroom to a night out.
Unlike a pompadour, a slick back doesn’t need big volume at the front. The hair lies closer to the head and flows back in one smooth sweep. That’s why it’s easier to pull off and easier to maintain in humidity, there’s less height to collapse.
The cut underneath
A slick back is flexible about the sides, and your choice sets the whole tone:
- Slick back with faded or undercut sides — modern, sharp and high-contrast. The short sides keep you cool and stop the sides puffing out in the heat. Ask about an undercut for the boldest version.
- Slick back with tapered sides — a softer, more classic gentleman’s look where the hair is all one flowing piece. More formal, more traditional.
The most important thing to tell your barber is that you intend to wear it slicked back. That changes how much length we leave and how we shape the top so it lies down smoothly rather than sticking up. If you’re not sure how to phrase your request, our guide on how to ask for a haircut in Singapore is worth a read. You’ll find the slick back under our men’s cut and grooming menu, with men’s cuts from $40.
How much length do you need?
This is the question everyone asks. For a proper slick back, you need enough length on top that the hair reaches back towards your crown when combed, roughly 8 to 10 centimetres or more at the front. If your hair is too short, it won’t lie back, it’ll just stick up or stop halfway.
A shorter slick (around 5 to 7cm) is doable and gives a neater, more contained look, but the longer your hair, the more dramatic and flowing the sweep. If you’re growing it out specifically for this style, patience and regular tidy-ups will keep you looking sharp through the middle stage.
Wet look vs matte slick
This is the single biggest style decision, and it completely changes the vibe.
Wet look (glossy)
The wet-look slick uses a shiny, high-hold product to create that polished, just-stepped-out-of-the-shower gloss. It’s formal, sharp and perfect for weddings, interviews and events. The downside: it looks best when freshly done and, in Singapore’s heat, high-shine products can start to look greasy rather than glossy if you overload them.
Matte slick (natural)
The matte slick uses a low-shine clay or paste for a more natural, textured, everyday finish. It doesn’t have the formal polish of the wet look, but it holds better through a humid day, hides sweat better, and reads more casual and modern. For daily wear in our climate, matte usually wins.
Products that survive Singapore humidity
Product choice makes or breaks a slick back here. Your two friends are:
- Pomade — for the wet, glossy look. Choose a water-based pomade so it rinses out easily and doesn’t build up. Look for strong or firm hold.
- Clay or matte paste — for the natural, matte look with reliable, sweat-resistant grip.
The technique matters as much as the product. Apply to damp, towel-dried hair, not soaking and not bone dry, then blow-dry the hair back first to train the direction before you add product. Heat-setting the direction is the secret to all-day hold. Finish by combing straight back. On brutally humid days, a light mist of hairspray at the end locks it. Surviving the humidity
Let’s be realistic about our weather. Here’s how to keep a slick back intact:
- Blow-dry the direction first — this trains the hair to go back and dramatically improves hold.
- Don’t over-apply — too much product plus sweat equals a greasy, sliding mess. Start with a small amount and add if needed.
- Lean matte for daytime, save the high-shine wet look for air-conditioned events.
- Carry a comb — a quick comb-through after your commute resets the shape in seconds.
- Keep the sides short — faded or tapered sides fight puffiness far better than longer sides.
Finish, product and occasion at a glance
| Finish | Best product | Best occasion |
|---|---|---|
| Wet look (glossy) | Water-based pomade, firm hold | Weddings, interviews, formal events |
| Matte (natural) | Matte clay or paste | Everyday, office, humid days |
| Loose / textured slick | Light clay or sea-salt spray | Casual weekends, relaxed looks |
Growing into it
The hardest part of a slick back isn’t the style, it’s getting the length. The awkward in-between stage, when your hair is too long to be tidy but too short to lie back, tests everyone’s patience. A few tips to get through it:
- Get regular tidy-ups on the sides and neckline even while growing the top, so you always look intentional rather than scruffy.
- Start training the direction early, comb it back with a little product even when it doesn’t fully hold yet.
- A loose, textured slick with matte product is your best friend in the middle stage, it forgives the in-between length.
Once you’ve got the length, the slick back becomes one of the fastest, most reliable looks you can own, sharp for work, polished for a wedding, relaxed for the weekend, all from the same cut.
